hey shona, this is cool. that is some new camera you've got there. and, of course, your eye for detail helps too :)

Wow, what a lovely piece! Is it ivory? It appears to be hand carved. Did you do something special to the background pieces to make them that out of focus? It looks nice!
This from a chess board that we got in Ireland last year. The board and pieces are all carved from stone. When we bought it we didn't think about how heavy it would be to ship home. Luckily I have a wonderful mother who was willing to bring it over for us! It does look ivory in this photo.
I did not photoshop the background to be blurry, I just used the detail button on my camera (it looks like a flower), that causes the camera to automatically focus on the nearest object.
Awesome! Is the lighting from an actual light source, or is this photoshop rendered? This is great Shona!!
I used a desk lamp to light this, not very fancy! The only thing I did with photoshop was to make it black and white and put the black border around it.
I love the overall feeling of this chess photo. It feels ancient and dusty. Sort of reminds me of a particular scene in the first Harry Potter movie.

Shona: Since you're taking a break from your art blog, I thought I would leave a comment for you here.
I just wanted to tell you that I really love your article in the May/June Somerset Studio. The vibrant colors are beautiful.
